- The Shop
This non air-conditioned Teochew Porridge and Tze Char place is formely from 59 Joo Chiat Place. They are now located in a nondescript shophouse kopitiam along Joo Chiat ROAD, the same stretch as Joo Chiat Complex.

With more than 60-years of history, this place have a lot of pure Teochew cooking such as the house specialities including steamed red snapper ($20 - $25), braised pork trotters ($6), cold crab brimming with creamy golden roe (around $14 each, depending on season), braised duck ($15) and whitebait omelette ($6).

They takes reservations and takeaway orders too. Simply give them a call at least 30min in advance at 6348 0973 to save time on waiting for takeaway orders.

- The Food
Braised Platter @ $8
Braised Platter @ $8
This succulent braised platter consists of braised pig small & large intestines, bean curbs (taupo) and fried beancurd skin (taukee). A thicker gravy will make it more prefect.

Pork Trotters (Tendon/Thigh) @ $6
Pork Trotters (Tendon/Thigh) @ $6
The meat is tender but I felt that the gravy is not rich and gelatinous enough. I still prefer those distinctive and strong flavour from the copious amounts of vinegar used.

Stir-fried Kang Kong with Sambal @ $7
Stir-fried Kang Kong with Sambal @ $7
We had order Sweet Potatoes Leaves with Sambal but none of us realize it was a wrong dish as we were too concentrate shooting the food. LOLz.

The veggie is crunchy but nothing spectacular. The sambal is not spicy and there is missing flavours from the dried prawns.

Traditional Prawn Roll (Ngoh Hiang) @ $6
Traditional Prawn Roll @ $6
Crispy on the outside with generous filling on the inside. I heard they use Pork Mesentary to wrap the prawn rolls, no wonder it's so tasty.

Teochew Style Prawns with Beancurd @ $15
Teochew Style Prawns with Beancurd @ $15
This is not exactly a Teochew dish but it's Ooh la la. The gravy that bathes the big fresh prawns and tofu is very addictive. It goes so well with with both the grainy porridge and rice.

Steamed Mullet @ Seasonal Price
Steamed Mullet @ Seasonal Price
Don't be deceive by the plain look that is only garnish with coriander. The flesh is tender smooth and so fresh that you’ll taste the delicate and sweet flavor of the fish.

To me, steamed fish taste more satisfying than fried fish but you will probably find it bland if you prefer more flavourful taste.

Preserved Radish Omelette @ $5
Preserved Radish Omelette @ $5
The preserved radish omelette (also known as Chai Poh Omelette (菜脯卵)) was another winner. The preserved radishes give a good crunch to the omelette and it's not overly salty.

7 of us spend $80 on a total bill with 7 drinks.

- My Opinion
If you are craving for authentic Teochew muay, this is the place.

The variety and the quality of the dishes have reasonable price if you stay away from the seasonal seafood. Having said that, most Tze Char stall do not serve fresh seafood with the same amount paid. Plus you pay a higher price for a quality fresh seafood at restaurant.

The dishes may look simple but they are mostly delicious and it's much better than those Geylang Teochew Porridge.

The Yam Paste (or nee - $2) crowned with pumpkin mash & gingko nuts receive a lot of good review. But sadly, we didn't order that.

Lastly, thank you Charlene for inviting us to this August Makan gathering. It has been a fulfilling lunch filled with interesting and juicy gossip.

Xu Jun Sheng will close on 14 Apr due to Manpower issue and owners are getting too old to run the place. Quickly enjoy one of the best teochew muay in Singapore before they close!

  1. DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE TO EAT!

As per your recommendation, I drove all the way from woodlands to Joo Chiat to give it a try.

I would confidently say this is the worst meal I ever had. I ordered vegetable, braised meat, salted fish steam pork and some other dishes.

The vegetable was good n so was the braised meat. I cut a piece of steam pork to eat n the texture feels alittle weird as its soft (not like it's soft n tender kind of feeling) n so I thought it because of the salted fish.

I did not suspect anything n continue eatingthe rest of the dishes. The place are decorated with warm lights m so the place is kind of dark compared to other eating place.

Halfway through my meal, my friend mentioned that the steam pork is uncooked. We all took a closer look n the pork was actually pink in color n 98% of the whole piece is uncooked. Totally raw..... Awwwww...

I called for the waitress n tok her about it. She just gave me a "WTF" face n took the steam pork away. I told her that I do not want it anymore n she can cancel the order of the steam pork. She just rolled her eyes n walk away.

I went to make payment feeling so uncomfortable for eating raw pork. When I'm at the cashier, they insisted on charging me with the pork. I explained that I had return it n I should not be charge as it is uncooked. The person blow his top n said "Miss, we do not have this rule that u return n we can cancel the order. We can just re-steam for u and u can eat it."

After hearing such irresponsible n rude word, I blew my top. I told him that it's not right to re-steam food ESP raw meat after letting it sit outside. It will be contaminated.
He continued on insisting that is their all time practice n it's ok.

He said "well nvm, just count myself unlucky. I'll not charge u but next time u come n eat, just bring it back for me to resteam."

Such irresponsible attitude... I was really upset over it n so I called NEA n reported this case.

They did not apologize at all n they don't even bother to change a new plate. Yet insisted on steaming the old uncooked contaminated meat n expect customer to eat.

WORST place to visit. Not just because the food is nice (actually just alright but it's pretty ex for just a little
Small dish n plain porridge) n they can throw their weight around n out customer health at risk.

In any case if u do not know what are the risk of taking uncooked pork..... Do read...

    - Meat and poultry can contain a number of bacteria that can cause food poisoning. These bugs which include campylobacter, salmonella and most seriously, e.coli are destroyed by high temperatures. If meat is undercooked, it may not reach a sufficiently high temperature to kill the bacteria.
Symptoms of food poisoning include abdominal cramps, diarrhoea and vomiting which can last several days and leave the sufferer feeling very weak.

Beef and lamb can be eaten underdone as long as the meat is a single piece; either joints or smaller cuts such as steaks and chops. This is because the bacteria are found on the surface of the meat and not in the centre. Provided the outside is cooked at a high temperature, the meat is safe to eat, even if it remains pink in the middle.
Pork and poultry should never be undercooked. If you are cooking either, make sure that you cook it until the juices that run out when you put a skewer in, run clear. Undercooked pork can also cause other health problems such as tapeworm and trichinellosis even if it's a small portion.
Because the bacteria that cause food poisoning live on or near the surface of the meat, the greater the surface area, the greater the risk. Minced or chopped meat of any description and any foods such as sausages and burgers must be thoroughly cooked to avoid the risk of poisoning.

Many people get sick from eating food contaminated by bacteria or other harmful organisms.

The potential health hazards of eating rare pork are not worth taking the risk of eating it undercooked.

  3. Hi Jacklyn,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. I feel you, given in your position I will be equally pissed.

The food we had that day was pretty good as overall but there were only few dish that we raved. I am sure there will be some awesome food and some less well-liked everywhere, but didn't expect you to encounter such a bad experience with them.

I think you should feedback to the boss, perhaps the staff didn't know how to handle the situation, as you know they are most uncles and aunties, usually less tactful.
